From the February 21, 1876 Fayetteville Observer: "We have no school since some time before Christmas. Our former teacher left us and went back to land of his nativity, South Carolina; so you see we have no school. That stirring and energetic and friend to education, Capt. Tolley, gave notice that there would be a meeting of the citizens of Flintville and the vicinity at the Methodist Church on the 18th inst. at 7 o'clock P.M.....The chairman explained that the object of the meeting was to devise some plan to get up a school and to elect Trustees.....We must have a school and will have one. Our children must be educated. We, have a healthy place and good society. Therefore, we have adopted a motto of progress."
