From the May 6, 1875 Fayetteville Observer : "Flintville, not to be outdone by more pretentious towns, has organized an "Orthographical Tournament" known as the "Flintville Spelling Club." The club is composed of two sides, with a Captain to each. Each member of Class No. 1 proposes a word to the same member of Class No. 2, until twenty-five words have been proposed, when class No. 2 does the same thing. Mr. E.P. castles, principal of the school at this place, acts as Judge. As a general thing, school children outspell grown persons."
